From the close-up period (a couple of weeks prior to calving) until peak lactation (5 to 7 weeks after calving), the cow is in negative energy balance (NEB), meaning that she is not getting enough
energy to cover her metabolic needs, as she is not able to digest enough feed. Before calving, the calf takes up a lot of space, which limits the available space for feed in the digestive system, whereas after calving, the energy required by milk production exceeds the amount of energy available from the feed intake. Instead, she utilises her fat reserves to cover her needs.

This leads to a loss of body condition and the release into the blood of ketone bodies by the liver, which can lead to ketosis. An excessive negative energy balance may also lead to impaired
fertility.

"Within our herd of 120 dairy cows and 80 heifers, we noticed an insufficient body condition (due to excessive Negative Energy Balance) in our first-calf heifers. As a result, they struggled to start lactation. We also observed difficulties with cows coming into heat. That’s why we started using ViloFoss Energy Boost in 2017, adding a liquid supplement to the automatic concentrate dispenser. In terms of quantity, we provide 200 ml per cow per day during the first two months of lactation. Shortly after, we observed an improvement in the cows' body condition, leading to a better start to lactation. As a result, our milk production also increased. Additionally, our milk testing results show that we now have almost no cases of ketosis in our cows."
