Reduce heating of Total Mixed Ration and improve the cattle feed

In hot summer months, the heat greatly reduces energy in the Total Mixed Ration, which has a negative impact on cattle nutrition requirements. There are ways to avoid this.

Studies from the United States show that up to 6% of the nutrition of cattle feed "evaporates" within 12 hours. Fermentation of the feed is the cause of heat generation. This primarily affects the dry matter percentage, but carbohydrates and the protein content in the feed are also reduced.

Why does heat develop in cattle feed?

Mould and yeast develop good growth conditions at:

  • Availability of sugar and fast-metabolisable carbohydrates
  • Oxygen-rich environment
  • High humidity
  • High temperatures

When the silage is removed from the silo and mixed with other feed items:

  • Silage is moved from oxygen-poor to oxygen-rich environment
  • Mixes with energy-rich carbohydrates
  • Yeast and mould burn off carbohydrates and develop heat
  • Addition of water increases humidity

Protect your cattle feed against loss of nutrition

To improve the quality of feed during the hot summer months Vilofoss has created a dry acid cattle feed supplement, called FreshFoss Premium.

The product reduces the heating of TMR (Total Mixed Ration), thereby increasing the overall quality of your cattle feed. The product consists of a special combination of salts from organic acids, which reduce the growth of unwanted bacteria and mould. This way, the product helps delay the heating process in the feed ration, thus protecting against loss of dry matter and nutrients.
